The term phenomenal transparency, as opposed to literal transparency, originates in Colin Rowe's book "Transparency". Rowe defines the term as describing "an inherent quality of organization." The example Rowe uses to explain the term is Le Corbusier's Villa Garche where Rowe says "...there is a continuous dialectic between fact and implication. The reality of deep space is constantly opposed to the inference of shallow space; and by means of the resultant tension, reading after reading is enforced."
